I’m just going to say it and get t out of the way, PAX Prime 2013 is absolutely incredible! The massive scale, the awesome people (seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever been in a more energetic and friendly crowd!), panels, shows, and then there’s the games… holy crap, the games! It’s all here, XCOM: Enemy Within, Watch Dogs, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Pokemon XY, and PEGGLE 2, the list goes on and on. I haven’t even had the chance to look at a third of the stuff that’s going on here!
The Mega64 10 Year Anniversary Panel
Nostalgia, Thrills, Chills, Fights, Feuds, Surprises, and laughter aplenty. This was the Mega 64 panel. We viewers journeyed with Rocco, Shawn, Derek, and surprise guest Tommy Tallarico (initially disguised as a really convincing Garret), through the storied history of Mega64. Those of us present got to see, chuckle at, the very beginnings the Mega64 crew’s first ventures into video production along with all the misadventures that made Mega64 the awkwardly hilarious sensation it is today. This was a panel of revelations and laughs at the expense of the past. For starters, Mega64 started out as a local access TV show! One that became popular enough to attract the attention G4TV. Cool right? So how come we never saw it on G4? Because those in charge of G4 thought the premise was “too niche” to go any further and therefore wasn’t worth there attention. However, here we are in 2013 and Mega64 is still gaining popularity while G4 is a thing of the past, oh the sweet, delicious, irony!
We were treated to a live resurgence of the Gamer Warz…that is until Garret found out and shouted everyone down before the Warz got out of hand again (Rocco still won). The team dealt some major pain to the Xbox One in a never-before-seen video meant to have been released before most of the consoles controversial “features” were removed. Relevant anymore? No. Still funny? You’d better believe it. I mean it’s the Xbox One! Even if it winds up being seen as the best console of the generation (not likely), it’ll still be the butt of many a joke thanks to the initial announcement.
All in all, this was Mega64 at it’s very best. They’ve been around for 10 wonderful years and it looks like they’ll be going for many more to come.
A tip of my hat to you Mega64!
Tales From the PAX Prime Show-floor
I didn’t have much time to spend on the show-floor, but man I wish I had. Everything we’ve been excited to see is here, along with a ton of things that you haven’t seen or heard of yet, but will want to check out once you eventually see it (sooner rather than later if I have anything to say about it). For now though, I’d like to talk to you about the one game I managed to get some hands-on time with thus far: PEGGLE 2!
Now, those of you who have played the original Peggle know exactly why this is the one game a PAX attendee needs try. For those of you who haven’t…get the demo, then get the game and play with some friends. Then you’ll know. There’s no proper way to describe Peggle to a non-Peggler, it’s something you must experience in order to truly comprehend why it’s so awesome (and awesome really is the best word to describe it). And Peggle 2, well let’s just say that if the demo is any indication then this is going to be everything a Peggler ( I defy you to think of a cooler term!) would want in a sequel. It’s kept the basic gameplay, but cranked up the wackiness, subtly self-aware humor, and fanfare up to 11. Oh and there’s new masters, one of which was playable. This new master has the ability to render all non-red pegs intangible, allowing you to plow though them while making a sick red-peg combo! It runs smoother, sounds better, the colors are richer (though that may have been the display I was playing on), and did I mention that it sounds better? The music in this game plays with you, building and building up until you get that final red peg and bursting into a grand finale celebrating your great accomplishment!
So to sum up Peggle 2…it was good.
After that I wandered around a captured some pics of the show for you all, they’re on the our Facebook page now if you’d like to check them out (I would).
That’s all I have for Friday, stop by tomorrow for the goings-on for Saturday! I’ll have a lot more to say about the other games at the show, especially Dragon Age: Inquisition!
