Video game movies are only a little more frequent now than they were in the 2000s, but the amount of proposed projects has steadily been going up. Most of these projects never see the light of day, but the interest in Hollywood is still seemingly there. Anyway, we got a unexpected tidbit of news about the near decade-old BioShock project this week. Nothing solid, of course, but it’s more than we’ve gotten since the first rumors started circulating.
This little piece of news comes from a GamesRadar interview with Francis Lawrence, one of the producers attached to the project. As reported by GameSpot, Lawrence mentioned that they’re still working on a script but was confident that they were getting close and that “I’m feeling really good about it.” He also mentioned that Take-Two (the rightsholder of BioShock) is apparently very interested in seeing a BioShock movie actually release.
Lawrence mused that the movie could potentially see active production start in 2027, and that Take-Two is eyeing the potential film release to coincide with something else that the publisher is doing with BioShock. Whether that’s the now-cancelled BioShock 4 or an entirely new project, Lawrence didn’t know.
I remember hearing about a possible BioShock movie a long, long time ago now. At the time, it was said that Gore Verbinski (director of Pirates of the Caribbean) was attached to direct, but, obviously nothing ever materialized. At the time, I was pretty psyched by the idea, and I’d love it if BioShock got more recognition outside of video games, but I wonder of today’s Hollywood is capable of doing it justice. I guess we’ll see, yeah?
What do you think? Do you want to see a BioShock movie?
