It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen anything StarCraft-related. Like, I don’t think Activision-Blizzard has done anything with the IP since 2017, and that was just StarCraft Remastered! Just…wow, right! I’m surprised all the StarCraft fans out there haven’t already died from hunger! For those fans who are still kicking though, there’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel! Blizzard just announced a new game and it’s coming in, uh, 2030. Oof.
In what was no doubt a calculated attempt to drive up the hype at this year’s BlizzCon, Activision-Blizzard kicked things off by announcing a new StarCraft game, titled simply as “StarCraft.” The trailer was purely cinematic and aimed for feel over substance, but the point is that a new game is coming…in 4 years.
As for details, all we know is that “StarCraft” will be an action-shooter game and that it’ll be in third-person perspective. All the usual factions will apparently make appearances too, though we don’t know to what capacity yet. So, positive news for shooter fans and “better luck next time” to those who want more traditional StarCraft, I guess.
I think we all get that AAA development takes an obnoxiously long time these days, but still, 4 years? A lot can happen in 4 four years. Heck, this could even wind up getting canceled outright, so it seems awfully early to be announcing this. Well, here’s hoping we get regular updates instead of the standard several years of radio silence whenever projects get announced this early.
What do you think of this announcement? Would you rather game makers announce their stuff closer to release rather than having to spend literal years in anticipation?
