For much of 2020 and even some of 2021, Among Us was the game; the one everybody knew and that the internet as a whole just could not help but constantly reference. Like many cultural flashpoint games before it, though, its sun set almost as swiflty as it rose. Among Us is now occupying a similar space to games like Five Nights at Freddy’s; no longer massively popular but still enjoys a cult following large enough to keep it and its developer afloat. Better than that, actually, as Innersloth has actually released a brand new game!
In Among Us Story: On Guard, players enter a training simulation meant to help crewmates get better at spotting impostors and thus survive longer while out on the job. This isn’t just a normal Among Us lobby with some story attached, though. Rather, this is a single-player story-driven experience whereing players must put their detective skills to work in order sus out who the killer is. It’s the kind of thing that only existed in headcanon before, but now it’s a fully realized experience.
Oh, and it’s available to try right now as part of Steam Next Fest! Yup, from now until the 22nd, fans can hop in and see if they’re actually any good at using evidence to find out whodunnit rather than just catching them in a lie or something. Additionally, players will have to familiarize themselves with each of the characters so as to be able to identify whether someone’s acting…differently.
I don’t think this will bring a ton of players back to Among Us, but I don’t think it has to. The main game seems to be doing well enough, and Innersloth is comfortable making something new, so it’s probably fine if this one is just for the fans. Give it a try if you’re still up to sending another imposter out an airlock.
What do you think of this? Do you think Innersloth waited too long to properly capitalize on Among Us’ popularity, or are they doing things right?
