The Latest Metroid Dread Teaser is…Wow!

Okay, so I don’t usually do this, but spoiler warning for those wanting to go into Metroid Dread completely blind. I, of course, don’t know anything more than what’s already been shown by Nintendo, but Nintendo just revealed a lot in the last trailer, so turn back now if you want the full impact of the game’s surprises. Okay? Good. Let’s get on with it.

So yeah, there’s a lot going on here, so let’s start with what Samus is able to do this time around. The Aeion abilities from Metroid: Samus Returns are back and the one highlighted here is called “Flash Shift.” It allows Samus to instantly travel a short distance either forward or backward, and it can even be activated in mid-air. “Pulse Radar” is back too, allowing players to scan their surrounding and find secrets more easily.

Other new abilities include “Storm Missile” and “Cross Bomb” which let Samus fire a cluster of self-guided missiles and launch a bomb that explodes in four directions respectively. Our favorite bounty hunter is also getting a bunch of fan favorite abilities from past games like: ice missiles, the speed booster, Screw Attack and Shinespark! So basically all the bread and butter abilities from Super Metroid are finally back (and all in the same game no less!)

The biggest reveal though has to be the fact that the Chozo are not extinct! It was never explicitly stated that they were, but it was kind of assumed considering the states of planets like Zebes and Tallon IV. As it turns out, it was just the peaceful faction of the Chozo that got wiped out, and the species’ militant faction is still very much alive. It’s unknown why such a powerful force hasn’t had a bigger presence in the Metroid galaxy, but I’m guessing that organizations like the Galactic Federation are glad that these Chozo haven’t been interested in intervention (or conquest) up until this point. I guess we’ll see if that changes over the course of the game. Hopefully Samus can (somehow) keep them from doing so.

Metroid Dread is out next month! Are you ready for it? Are you more interested in other games?
