An interesting picture just showed up on the official Gears of War twitter page, one that looks kind of familiar if you ask me. It looks like something from an older Gears game. In fact I’d say it looks like something from the best Gears game. Here, check it out!
Yeah it’s just a hand holding some COG dog tags, but this is something we’ve seen before. Take a quick look at the image at the top of this post, then look at the tweet again. They look pretty close don’t they? I’m thinking this is a not-so-subtle tease for some sort of “Gears 2 Remastered.” It would make sense for Microsoft to put out something like that at the moment since they’ve been struggling to keep the Gears series relevant in recent years. My guess is that they’ve got another new Gears game in development right now, and they want to re-ignite interest before announcing/releasing it. I have to say, it would be a smart plan. Gears 2 was the most popular Gears game, so if anything can remind fans of what the series once was, it’s Gears 2.
The Gears of War games have always been over-the-top with their action, combat mechanics, and gorilla-man character designs. They’re almost meant to be funny in a way. Gears 2 is no exception to this, but it actually managed to pull of some rather poignant moments amidst the craziness. If the series had done more of that in subsequent games, perhaps it wouldn’t be so difficult to maintain fan interest now.
Whatever the reason though, I’d definitely be glad to see the game make a return. I don’t have an Xbox handy, so won’t be able to play it, but I’d still like to see newer gamers experience it for the first time.
