Who is Your Smash Bros Main?

Now that Super Smash Bros Ultimate has been out for a little over a month, I thought it would be fun to pose a little question to all of my fellow Smash Bros fans out there.  Who is your main and why?  If you want, I can go first….

To begin, let me give you a very brief history of how my main characters changed over time.  When I first played Super Smash Bros on the Nintendo 64, probably my favorite characters to play as were Link, Samus, and Kirby, more or less in that order.  Link has long been one of my favorite Nintendo characters because of how much of a Zelda fan I am and was, naturally, the character I played as most.  As for Samus, however, at this time, I actually had no idea who she was.  All I knew was that she was super cool, and I really enjoyed shooting missiles at people.  Lastly was Kirby, with whom I enjoyed whacking people with hammers and constantly doing that down B attack whenever someone wandered underneath that floaty pink puffball.

When Melee came out, I was amazed at all the new characters I could now play as.  It was as overwhelming as it was thrilling!  Even so, after having endless fun trying out all the new characters, I recall more or less returning to my old mains from the N64, except I had replaced Link with Young Link due to my immense love of Majora’s Mask and the fact that he looked adorable when he drank milk.

Next came Brawl, where my new favorite team was Link, Samus, and…King Dedede.  After some time, and some resistance, my old mains of Link and Samus finally gave way almost exclusively to Dedede, who was, for me, basically a “better Kirby”.  His up B was like Kirby’s down B attack, and that giant hammer of his just annihilated my opponents in a way that Kirby’s tiny hammer just never could.  Oh yeah, Dedede and I were a force to be reckoned with.

Nothing really changed with the release of the Wii U entry into the Smash series, but a new favorite did arrive to eclipse even my love of Dedede and his hammer of death when Ultimate came onto the scene.  If you guys have been following along with, well, any mention I’ve made concerning the newest entry into the Smash Bros series, then you’ll know who my new main is.  And without further ado, my current trio of mains is Samus, Dedede, and the Kremling King himself, King K. Rool.

Oh, how excited I was to finally get to play as that big ol’ crocodile, one of the many reasons the original Donkey Kong Country games on the SNES are still some of my favorite games of all time.  Honestly, after he didn’t appear in the Wii U Super Smash Bros, I had given up all hope that he’d ever get his place in the Smash Bros series.  In fact, I was barely following along with the news on Ultimate until I read a journal entry on Deviant Art where a fellow K. Rool fan mentioned something very intriguing.  Assuming I had misheard, I did a quick search on Youtube, only to have my doubts crushed into a fine powder of overwhelming joy and surprise when I came upon K. Rool’s awesome reveal trailer!

Oh yes, K. Rool is back, and he’s better than I ever could have hoped for.  I love that pretty much all of his moves are familiar ones that come from the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy and Donkey Kong 64.  I could go on and on, but the point is, K. Rool in Ultimate is absolutely perfect in every way, an assessment with which I think he would also agree.  My favorite move by far has got to be his blunderbuss, which can suck in your opponents if they wander too close after that initial cannonball is fired.  It actually took me a few days to figure that out.  It took me even longer to realize that, after sucking someone up, you can shoot them straight upwards if you so choose rather than simply at a diagonal.  How neat.  I very much enjoy standing by the edge of a stage and shooting at/sucking up characters as they desperately try to return to solid ground.  Oh, how their hopelessness, as they get perpetually launched away from safety, amuses me to no end.

I would perhaps be remiss if I were not to mention that, despite spending nearly all of my time playing as K. Rool, Dedede remains my best main, though I only resort to using him whenever one of the challenges on the spirit board proves too difficult.  And then an endless barrage of Dedede’s up B attack usually does the trick.  And of course, Samus gets her time to shine whenever I need a faster character who specializes in long-range attacks.

Well, enough about me.  Now it’s your turn, dear readers, to share your thoughts.  Please let me know what your Smash Bros mains are.  I’d love to hear from you!

    K. Rool is a great pick for your main, his moves are extremely entertaining and he’s got this awesome attitude about him! Love how all his moves are references to past DK games too! Be careful, though; there’s a lot salt surrounding him in the Smash community. 😀 As for me, I’ve been a Yoshi main as far back as Super Smash Bros. Melee. He’s my favorite Mario character and I’ve always enjoyed his unusual move set. He’s powerful in his own right, and since hardly anyone plays him, it’s easy to catch online players off-guard. When I feel like changing things up though, I’ll typically go for Meta-Knight, Diddy Kong, Ridley, or Isabelle. (Have to “change things up” more often than not when playing locally though, since my friends hate, and mean *HATE* playing against my Yoshi. :D)

I love K. Rool’s attitude. Just the way he walks screams “confidence”! I’ve gotten pretty good with K. Rool. He’s the only character thus far where I was able to reach 9.9 in Classic Mode. Samus and King Dedede haven’t been able to get past 9.8 (and that’s with using Classic Tickets).

Yoshi is indeed pretty tough. When I was playing through Ultimate’s World of Light and hadn’t unlocked my mains yet, I played as Yoshi a lot. Sometimes I would play as someone else to mix things up, only to encounter a tough battle, and sometimes switching to Yoshi was all it took to win.

I like cycling between characters – I’ve been playing kirby and pikachu since the beginning, in 3DS/WiiU I added Robin, villager and a mii swordfighter (modelled after Lina Inverse from Slayers), now I’ve got the Isaac skin for the swordfighter (yeeeees Golden Sun) and I’m trying out Isabelle and wii fit trainer. My best is probably kirby, but pikachu’s not far behind and Robin might be catching up too (probably because my partner also plays Robin so we can learn tricks from each other). Mostly I like switching it up to keep people on their toes!

I’m loving the co-op for classic mode, though it means I technically haven’t hit 9.9 on my own yet =P

I’m pretty decent with Kirby, even if I don’t use him nearly as much as I used to. Strangely enough, though I played as Kirby a fair bit in the past, I almost never used his copy ability. Not sure why, considering that’s Kirby’s iconic ability….

Just today, I dressed a Mii Fighter up as Skull Kid. Even though I don’t really intend on playing as them, it’s something I’ve been meaning to do, since I very much wanted Skull Kid as a playable character, and that never happened, so this is the next best thing.

Counter attacks are like that for me! I built the swordfighter not to have a counter because I know I never use it, so it’d be a dead button. That said, kirby’s copy ability leaves you pretty vulnerable – it may be better not to use it than to use it too much (I’m sometimes guilty of that =P )

Yeah, I like the costumes as ‘we can’t make every character you’d like, but you can at least look like them’.

I’m the same way with countering. I pretty much never, ever use it. (It was years before I started even using the shield. I also rarely ever use the grab button.) I had to really force myself to start using K. Rool’s counter attack, and even then, I forget it exists most of the time. In fact, he’s the only character that I actually put effort into learning every one of his attacks, more or less (because I’m a big SNES Donkey Kong Country fan). For everyone else, I stick with the same few attacks and usually forget half of what the character can do.
