To Regale with Resonance!

With June marking the start of the fun and lighthearted summer months, what better way to kick things off than with a month of music! Nearly since the site’s inception, one of our most popular series is “Resonance,” in which we celebrate the highs (and occasional lows) of game music.  It goes without saying that music and video games go hand-in-hand. From the opening blips and bloops of Pac-Man to the orchestral maneuverings of Skyrim, music has played an indelible role in video game history. We started our “Resonance” series as a way to simply share some of our favorite songs. It’s since turned into a compendium of sound, one that honors the work of composers and musicians who have chosen to make game music their life’s work. This isn’t to say that we take our “Resonance” posts too seriously — after all, we aren’t seasoned musicologists. We do them in the spirit of fun, the spirit of sharing, and the spirit of inspiration, because, let’s be honest; sometimes music makes the game, and sometimes it breaks it. Sometimes we’re emotionally moved by the music we hear while battling the biggest foes, and sometimes we’re lulled into a sense of serenity while exploring.

Each “Resonance” post offers a unique look into how we’re affected by the sounds that we hear while playing. As with so many things in life, no two “Resonance” posts are alike! And it’s with that in mind that we offer up June as “Resonance” month. Starting next week, each Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, we’ll be posting individual “Resonance” posts covering various pieces of game music. The month will culminate in each of our own top-10 lists featuring our all-time favorite music — our own personal gaming soundtracks, if you will. We certainly hope that you’ll join us as we “let the music play” in oh so many ways!
