It’s probably fair to say that the release of Final Fantasy VII Revelation is a pretty substantial event in gaming. Not in the sense that it’s extremely anticipated like GTA VI is, but rather that it marks the conclusion off an absolutely colossal, years-long effort by Square Enix to transform one of its greatest classics (arguably the one that put it on the mainstream map) into a modern masterpiece. With this, it’s very likely that we will finally say goodbye to Cloud, Sephiroth and Final Fantasy VII as a whole. But, it seems that goodbye is coming at a certain cost.
According to comments made by Game Director Naoki Hamaguchi in an interview with Gamespot on September 18th, Final Fantasy VII Revelation will “probably” take up around 200GB of hard drive space. He also said that this file size requirement would likely prevent Square Enix from releasing the game physically (as it would require more than 3 blu-rays). Hamaguchi-san did take care to also mention in that interview that they want to have some kind of physical release, but that the company cannot provide details just yet.
From what I’ve played of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, including, recently, a demo for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, it’s definitely something worth experiencing to the end, especially if you’re a Final Fantasy fan. It’s also understandable that these games are so big considering both their visuals and the sheer amount of content packed into them. Still, it is a a bit disappointing to see file sizes continue to balloon ever more out of control.
Like, I get it. It takes a lot of space to make a game look both beautiful and deep, but it isn’t just Final Fantasy VII doing this; it’s practically every big AAA release. It’s kind of insane to think that many individual games now require an entire fifth of a terabyt hard drive each and that those file sizes are still growing. I mean, how long until we get our first terabyte-sized game? And will that even be enough? Surely something’s gotta give by that point right?
