If you’ve either somehow never played a Metro game or would just like to relive some of its better moments before Metro 2039 comes out, you’re in luck. All three games are on sale as a bundle on both Fanatical and PSN right now for about $6. Even if all the games are a bit old at this point, that’s quite the markdown!
I don’t know if it’s accurate to say that the Metro games are one of the more unique depictions of the post-apocalypse, but they are quite distinctive at the very least. A whole society trying to eek out a basic existence in the network of subway tunnels beneath Moscow is a fascinating idea to consider, and it becomes even more so with all the extra wrinkles the story introduces.
Not only is everyone stuck underground, but they must also deal with ever-escalating assaults by monstrous mutated creatures and an ever-dwindling supply of ammunition. Whether one lives or dies hinges on having ammo for their weapons, so quality ammo is practically worth its weight in gold. The mutants aren’t even the only threat, either. There are several factions seeking domination of this underground society, and they’re plenty willing to get violent over it.
Dealing with all that is basically what Artyom (our MC) has to do in the first two games, but things get even more interesting in Metro: Exodus, where he and his friends realize that there’s no future in the underground and break out for better, less irradiated lands. Things don’t exactly go to plan, of course, and it becomes an almost Uncharted-esque adventure.
I unfortunately have only dipped my toes into each game so far. I meant to play each one through, but I kept getting distracted by one thing or another. So, with Metro 2039 on the horizon, I think that this might be my own sign to get back into them.
Have you played any of the Metro games? What did you think of them?
