Theorizing Even More with the Newest FNAF 2 Movie Trailer

Just a month before its December 5th theatrical debut, another trailer for the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 movie was released on November 5th, and let me tell you, I’m getting more and more excited by the day!  The movie is definitely going to be far more action-packed from what they’ve shown, and we also get some good looks at many of the animatronics!  And so, just like last time, I’m going to summarize and speculate about the trailer, but keep in mind that there may be spoilers for those unfamiliar with FNAF lore.

Official trailer by Blumhouse

The trailer starts with Vanessa waking up from a nightmare.  Honestly, every shot in the past few trailers has her looking extremely distressed, so clearly she has some major PTSD from what happened between herself and her father in the last movie.  It has also been confirmed that the scene with William Afton at the end of the hallway is part of a recurring bad dream that she discusses with Mike during their date.  We even see that part of this dream involves a child Vanessa hiding from her dad in a workshop, which contains sketches for his design of Freddy Fazbear.  While you might be tempted, however, to think that the workshop is simply for the purpose of designing and building animatronics, there is a shot of multiple pairs of scissors that seem more surgical in nature.  FNAF 5, along with certain novels/short stories, is where we’re introduced to the idea that Afton is experimenting with something called remnant (don’t ask me what it is…) and doing tests on child test subjects using some sort of nightmare gas, so I have to wonder if the movie continuity will also have Afton dabbling in more than just robotics.  (Though, I hope they’re not going that route because making Afton a mad scientist of sort was never something I particularly liked.)

We also see an adult Vanessa taking a box from her closet (possibly a reference to the FNAF 4 box?), which seems to contain various items, like a bag of marbles, a mirror, and Garret’s toy plane, implying these are all trophies Afton kept from his victims.  Now, why Vanessa has kept these morbid trinkets, I’m unsure, but we do see her closing her blinds and turning on an old CRT TV, and people have speculated that she might be wishing to contact the ghosts of the children perhaps?  Which I suppose wouldn’t be that far-fetched because she interacted with them in the first movie when they were possessing the FNAF 1 animatronics.  The ghosts even told Abby that she was nice to them.  I wonder if the ghosts have moved on from those animatronics since the place was fully abandoned, and now she’s trying to contact them some other way.  Perhaps she thinks this will help in some way with her nightmares.  (Does she feel guilty that she did nothing about her father’s crimes, even after becoming a police officer?  Does she wish to atone with them in some way?)  Or perhaps she thinks they can help with the situation with the FNAF 2 animatronics.

People are excited for Toy Chica because of…reasons

I also have to wonder how much of Vanessa’s dream can be taken as a literal traumatic event from her past and how much simply stems from her fear of her father.  I have a good deal of nightmares myself concerning a certain person from my past that I felt was dangerous, but the things this person does in the dream do not reflect actual reality.  Because in the dream, Vanessa is clearly running and hiding from her father in his workshop, and we even see him get a knife from the kitchen.  Just how much did he terrorize her growing up?  Honestly, it would be very interesting to learn more about what kind of a person, and father, Afton was.

We also hear some dialogue where Mike says, “We’ll never be able to move forward until you deal with the mess you left in your head”, to which Vanessa responds defensively, “My father was a monster, you know that.”  I’m unsure if Mike means that they can’t move forward in their relationship?  Though if he is being as accusatory as Vanessa seems to think, I have to wonder why, considering Mike knows how horrible Afton was.  (Seriously, Mike, at the very least, you know Afton killed at least 6 kids, including your brother!)  Then again, I think Mike’s concern might be from how these nightmares are affecting Vanessa, as in the previous trailer, we saw how these dreams are even seeping into reality, causing her to pull a gun on an imagined threat in what I can only assume is a therapist’s office.  Maybe Mike is simply worried because she is becoming a danger to herself, and maybe she had previously refused to address the problem until he convinced her to see a therapist.

We also have confirmation that Skeet Ulrich is indeed playing Henry, Afton’s business partner, who suspects that the “accident” that took the life of his daughter, Charlotte (AKA Charlie), was Afton’s doing, an event that took place years before the five children went missing.  We also have confirmation that the girl with the black hair is indeed Charlie, as we see a photo of her, alongside a note she wrote to him saying that she’s sorry he missed her birthday, but she loved her present.  It seems Henry’s portrayal in the movies is going to be similar to his novel appearance where he was a neglectful father.  (It’s also around this time that you can pause and read a few newspaper clippings that talk about the grand opening of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and William Afton.)  Honestly, is Glamrock Freddy always going to be the best FNAF dad?

One scene I find the most interesting is when we see Charlie holding a boy in her arms inside the FNAF 2 location back when it was open.  She is on stage, standing on the spot where the Puppet box presumably lifts up through the floor.  She screams before we see a shot of her from behind, falling to her knees.  The boy is no longer in her arms, but is also crouched on the stage, looking completely fine.  People are speculating that this could be Sammy, Charlie’s brother.  And unless I’m mistaken, he looks awfully similar to the boy in a previous trailer, when Afton, dressed as Spring Bonnie, is clearly trying to lure the boy into a back room.

Never follow the rabbit…

Now, we all know that Charlie possesses the Puppet, and we even see the Puppet’s iconic black and white stripes on Charlie’s sleeves.  What plenty of people, including myself, are wondering is if Charlie has already been killed by Afton, and is carrying her brother to safety in the form of the Puppet.  People do look over when she screams, but we don’t know if they’re really seeing her or the Puppet.  (Frankly, they don’t seem as panicked by a screaming girl holding another child in her arms as they should, unless they simply haven’t grasped what’s going on yet.)

The aforementioned scene where Afton is luring the boy into the back, paired with the shots where Afton grabs a knife from the pizzeria kitchen and then is seen wielding it high as he shuffles down a hallway, makes me wonder if Charlie saved her brother, but was killed by Afton in the process.  Then again, who’s going to think a knife wound was an accident?  What I think must have happened is, Charlie saved her brother, escaped with her life, and then Afton killed her before she had a chance to tell anyone what happened.  Some very interesting comments online had speculated that Charlie falls through the opening where the Puppet box is normally lifted, as she is seen standing in that very spot.  Afton could have opened the hatch remotely, and the resulting tragedy could have been brushed off as an accident.  It would also explain why she went on to possess the Puppet, as she would have died after landing on its box.

Moving on, we also see a small boy asking Abby if she’s ever going to go back to Freddy’s, followed by Abby arriving at, and entering, the FNAF 2 location.  It seems Abby must have gone missing for at least some span of time because we see her arrive at the Pizzaplex after dark, but when Mike then says he’s figured out where she is, it seems to be daytime.  We then see Mike and Vanessa arrive at the pizzeria, and just like the previous trailer, we hear a mysterious voice say, “Where are you gonna run to?”  Seeing as we know the animatronics (at least the Toys) are going to talk, I wonder if it could be Toy Freddy?  (I’m not totally on-board with the animatronics talking, though.  Hopefully when it comes down to it, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.)  We also get another look at the Withereds, including Withered Freddy!

While I’m unsure if the Withered Animatronics will be leaving the Pizzeria or not, the Toys most certainly are, and they’re going to be a much bigger threat than the FNAF 1 animatronics ever were.  As we already saw in the previous trailer, they are not averse to breaking into people’s houses and attacking random residents, and it looks like Abby is screaming because Toy Freddy has gotten into her room.  An unknown woman’s voice even says, “Half of this town will be dead by morning,” showing that the Toys are on quite the rampage!  Oh, and Mangle is definitely attacking Vanessa’s car!

POV: Mangle’s about to bite your frontal lobe

Also, at 1:27, we see a quick shot of a man pulling back a curtain in the FNAF 2 pizzeria.  People have speculated that he’s likely either the FNAF 2 night guard, Jeremy Fitzgerald, or Michael Afton (not to be confused with Mike Schmidt).  Honestly, I really hope it’s Michael Afton.  He was such an important character in the games, even if he was scarcely ever seen, so I’d love to see him in the movies!

And that covers my analysis of the newest FNAF 2 movie trailer, which combined my own speculation with what I had heard and read online.  I actually watched the first movie again just a week ago, and while I still enjoy it, it really did leave a lot to be desired.  It looks as if Blumhouse, and Scott, really learned from their mistakes and are going to make this movie so much more exciting, and hopefully much scarier, than the first!  Let’s just hope no one’s making any forts this time around…
