It’s been 12 years since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2. It’s kind of hard to believe, but it’s true. It really has been twelve years and two console generations since we were last able to check-in with Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance. Well, the wait is finally going to be over! Valve has at long last announced a new game set in the Half-Life universe: Half-Life: Alyx. There’s a catch though, it’s a VR game.
While details about the game won’t be forthcoming until early tomorrow, the fact that this is a VR game is already both kind of exciting and more than a little disappointing at the same time. It’s exciting because Valve’s choice of VR means they likely have some new technology they want to show off. Even so, it’s disappointing because it means many of us (myself included) aren’t going to get to play it because, well, one needs a VR headset to do that (and those are expensive!).
There’s also the possibility that they’ll limit Half-Life: Alyx to their own, proprietary VR device too, meaning only a select few VR owners might end up able to play it. For the sake of all the VR gamers out there, let’s hope at least that doesn’t happen. As for us non-VR folk, I suppose we’ll at least get to hear about the next chapter in the story.
What are your thoughts on Half-Life: Alyx? Are you psyched, annoyed, or do you just not care anymore at this point?
