Anna Purna Interactive and Mobuis have finally announced a release date for their space exploration game titled Outer Wilds. I haven’t been following it all that closely, but it looks quite impressive based on what I’ve seen so far. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say it looks fantastic. Just take a look at this trailer!
Okay so trailers and graphics can be misleading, and they certainly aren’t the be-all end-all of any game. I’m not interested in Outer Wilds because of its visuals. Rather I’m interested in the meaningful exploration it promises.
Outer Wilds is not a procedurally-generated game like No Man’s Sky and all its other peers. Instead, the developers went that extra mile and too the time to handcraft each and every planet found in the game’s solar system. This means that there will be interesting things to find no matter where one goes. Furthermore, it looks like we even have things to do at most locations. If Outer Wilds can really pull this off, it will be everything No Man’s Sky should have been and more! We’ve only got 7 more days until it hits PC and Xbox One, so it won’t be long until we find out whether or not it can deliver. Personally, I really hope it does. I’d absolutely love a space exploration game that offers more than pointless wandering.
What’s your take on Outer Wilds? Excited? Skeptical? What would it take to get you interested in this game?
