It’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these, but inspiration strikes when it will and I’m not one to argue with such things. Recently, I got into a conversation with a coworker regarding the power of games to move people. We agreed that it can come from almost any element of a game: story, gameplay, character moments, or music. I’m something of a sucker for video game music, so I started thinking about themes that moved me. It turns out there are quite a few, but the one I want to focus on today is “Gusty Garden Galaxy” from Super Mario Galaxy.

I’ve actually touched on this theme once before, during one of our Listmas celebrations. At the time, I was appreciating it as an adventurous song that captured the essence of what playing Super Mario Galaxy was like. This is still true, but I think there’s a bit more to the theme now.
By itself, Gusty Garden Galaxy is just plain beautiful. It’s energetic drum baseline keeps it feeling active and lively, but I think it’s the combination of trumpets and flutes that transform this piece into something truly special. I can’t help but swept-up in the dips and swells they create. It’s like being fully-immersed in a swell of pure adventure spirit!
On a more personal note, hearing this song always creates a feeling of “coming home” within me. As soon as it starts in, it’s the 2007 Christmas season again and I’m sitting down to a enjoy a truly wonderful Christmas present from my parents for the very first time. It’s a quality that all Mario game music has for me, I think. However, none exert it quite so powerfully as “Gusty Garden Galaxy.”
Is there any video game music that always puts a smile on your face? Any that instantly transport you back to simpler times?
