Resident Evil 2 Demo Available, Has a Catch

Resident Evil 2 is only about a couple of weeks away now, but avid fans can get some early hands-on time right now. If you have an Xbox One or PlayStation 4, all you have to do is download the recently released Resident Evil 2 “One-Shot” Demo. It’ll put you in the shoes of Raccoon City Police Officer Leon Kennedy and give you full reign to explore the RCPD. It’s not going to last forever though.

That’s right. They aren’t kidding with that “one-shot” name. Once you download the demo, you can only play it once. Oh, and you also only have 30 minutes in which to do so. After time runs out, that’s it. You’re gonna have to wait until Resident Evil 2 releases on January 25 before you can play any more of the game. It sounds like a massive tease (it is), but I think that’s part of the appeal here.

Putting a limit on the amount of time one can spend with this demo ensures that the demo serves its purpose: to get people psyched for the game. With limitation comes value, so fans are going to value the time they spend with this and will pay closer attention to everything they see in it. It’ll also encourage them to talk to their friends about it in the hopes of hearing about something they missed. In a word, this is smart. Very smart. Check it out if you’ve got the time, but make sure to do so when you can take it in to the utmost. You’ve only got one shot after all.

What’s your take on this? Do you like the limitation or do you think it’s too much of a tease on the part of Capcom?

One of the few games I’m actually hyped for this year. The 30min, one use demo is super effective marketing I think. Leaves the player wanting more. Smart move.

More games should do this it’s a great idea. I’m not looking forward to a lot of games this year but this one looks amazing!
