Welp, the end of 2018 will soon be upon us. Much like 2017 before it, it was both a great and terrible year for gaming. The highs reached were almost astronomical while some of the lows really couldn’t get much lower if they tried. That said, 2019 is looking like it’ll be even better, and I absolute cannot wait to dig into what’s to come. So, here’s my list of games that I absolutely cannot wait to play (in no particular order of course)!
I’ve been a fan of RPGs since the days of the SNES. I wasn’t very well-versed in the genre at first, but I quickly grew to love the in-depth brand of storytelling and character-building they offered. I missed out on many of the greats back in the PS2-era, but I won’t miss anymore. That goes double for Cyberpunk 2077, a game that will certainly be a landmark title for the genre. Never have I ever seen an RPG with so much apparent depth and production value. Seriously. Check out the full E3 Demo even if this only piques your interest a little bit.
I years past, Rage 2 would have hit right in the center of my interests as a gamer. Now though, now its more of an anomaly. This is a violent, post-apocalyptic shooter set in an extremely open world. Normally, that would disqualify it, but the mechanics, activities and style on display here just sound well…awesome! In a word, Rage 2 looks fun. Running around with incredible powers and wielding guns that kick like an angry mule is fun. Feeling like the baddest dude in the wasteland is fun. Basically, this is just about every power fantasy trope dialed up to 11, and that just sounds fun!
The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince
On the flipside of things, The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince is absolutely something I would have ignored 5 or 6 years ago. “Too much cutesy-ness and too little challenge” is probably what my reaction would have been. Now though? Now those very same qualities make it look great. I can’t wait to see how this little adventure unfolds. (And I hope the prince doesn’t hold the “princess'” lie against her. She’s got a good reason, after all.)
I’ve been waiting for this game so long that I thought it would never be made, much less get released next year. It’s been 13 years since the original Psychonauts made its debut. Thirteen long years of wondering whether or not I’d get to have another awesome adventure through the minds of misfits, monsters, and madmen with Rasputin the psychic acrobat. The game is coming though, and it looks like Tim Schafer hasn’t lost his touch at all!
The Outer Worlds
This basically looks like the sequel to Fallout New Vegas that I’ve always wanted. After the disappointment that was Fallout 4 (sorry, I really don’t like that one) and the ongoing dumpster fire that is Fallout 76, my hopes for any future Bethesda games were severely dampened. I didn’t think there was a company left that could fill the Fallout void, but in comes Obsidian to save the day! The dark humor is there; real character-building is there; multiple avenues of play are there! If everything that’s been shown so far is any indication, then Fallout fans are going to get the spiritual successor the never even dared to dream of! I can’t wait!
Kingdom Hearts III
As excited as I am to finally witness the conclusion to Sora’s story, it’s all coming just a little too late. There have been way too many side games and way to many plot points added in the thirteen years between Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts III for me to really care about what’s going on or even about Sora, Riku and Kairi themselves. I’m sure the game will be fantastic (it looks wonderful, actually), but I’m just not as excited about it as the other games on this list.
This one is also an honorable mention because I’m not really sure what kind of game it is. It looks like it’s going to be a thriller of some sort, but what the gameplay will wind up being is still unclear. All I know is that the scenario has my attention, and the idea of playing as an AI sounds really cool. I’ve got my eye on this one, and I’d advise other sci-fi fans to keep it on their radar too.
Well, that’s it. I’ve got plenty of other games I’m looking forward to either trying out or continuing, but these are at the top of my list. Hopefully they won’t disappoint. 🙂
Are you looking forward to any of these? What are your most anticipated games for 2019?
