#Listmas2016: What I’ll be playing next year…from the backlog

For those of us who play video games, it’s sometimes customary to take a little time at the end of any given year to look into what might be on our gaming plates in the next year.  To round out Listmas here, I’m giving into this same, fun habit with two posts related to my gaming hopes for 2017. In this first post, I’ll be covering the games from my backlog that I’d like to get through year. I figure that if I can make a concerted effort to play and complete games that I already have, then I’ll be able to supplement my library with new games (the subject of next week’s post).  As I’ve already got a couple games in progress already, I’ll cover them first in a quick paragraph, and then I’ll get to the “new” games. So, without further ado, let’s get to the list!

I currently have in progress two titles: Assassin’s Creed II and Fallout: New Vegas. In the case of the latter game, things have stalled in Fallout 4. And unfortunately, I’ve haven’t had much interest lately in  returning to it. In order to remedy that, I thought it might help to take a step back…literally. I picked up both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas thinking that they might help me rekindle the interest in apocalyptic, open world games. I’ve only just begin my travels in the wasted American West, and so far so good…all things considered. As for Assassin’s Creed II, that one’s been along time coming since I failed with the original Assassin’s Creed. It’s been going amazingly well, though I have it a point of slight boredom with it. I adore the Italian Renaissance setting, but as I’m about halfway through things, the gameplay is beginning to feel stale. Go to target, assassinate target, escape — it’s pretty much the same over and over again. Needing a break from it is one of the reasons I started up Fallout: New Vegas. I’ve got my fingers crossed that my interest in both titles will hold out.

Now, onto my list in earnest! Here’s what I’ll be pulling from my backlog next year:

The Bioshock Trilogy
Whether or not I’ll make it through the whole trilogy remains to be seen, but I have hope. (I want to get through the first game, at least. Anything after that I’ll consider a bonus.) It’s taken awhile for me to come around to playing first-person perspective games, and I think I’m finally ready to tackle this now-classic saga.

Borderlands 2
Why the second game and not the first? Because it’s the one I have! I don’t recall why this one made it into the stash over the original Borderlands…it might have had something to do with the fact that the story and characters looked a little more interesting. In either case, it’s a shame that I’ve not played a Borderlands game before, and it’s time to change that! It’s graphical stylings alone make it seem like it’s be a truly enjoyable romp.

I’m cheating with this one a little as I’ve already played it. But truth be told, I jammed through the game originally like a bull in a china shop, and I missed out on so much that the game had to offer. I’m highly interesting playing DisHonored 2, but I don’t think I spent enough quality time with the first game to be able to move on in good conscience. I need to give DisHonored its due.

Uncharted 4
Okay, so…I really thought I was going to play Uncharted 4 some time this year. But, I just haven’t. I don’t have any good excuse for it; I just haven’t. And now that everyone’s releasing their “favorite games of 2016,” and all those lists seem to include Uncharted 4, well…it seems I have some work to do. I know that I passed over some great titles from the past year, such as Batman: Arkham Knight, but with none of them do I feel the same sense of urgency. Somehow some way, I need to make Uncharted 4 happen.

The Last of Us
WHY HAVE I NOT FINISHED THIS GAME?! That’s the question that plagues me every time I log into the PS4. I got off to a good start with it, and things were going well…as well as they could go in a game like that, anyway. But then, I just stopped paying attention to it.  As much urgency as I may with Uncharted 4, it’s doubly as strong with The Last of Us because its sequel is on the horizon. And as that news continues to break, so too will plenty of story spoilers for the first game. Though…truth  be told, I know how the story ends, but still, I really have to get in gear with Joe and Ellie!

Looking at it in writing and thinking about the ever-dwindling time hat I have to play, this list feels a little daunting. But maybe I’ll take myself to task and aim to write about my progress next year. That might light enough of a fire for me to stay on top of my goals. Speaking of which, I have to also give a shout out to Metal Gear Ac!d, which I’ll also be starting up in the very near future. I’ll be keeping tabs on that game on my personal site. Whew! 2017 is shaping up to be a very game-y year!

If you’re “plagued” by a gaming backlog, what games from it do you hope to play/complete from it soon?

A fantastic list! Any list that includes Skyrim is bound to keep anyone busy for a long time — it’s the game that just keeps giving. 😀

Overcooked and TellTale’s Batman and The Walking Dead: New Frontier later in 2017. Mostly my backlog is just of current games this year that I’m getting for Christmas. Rise of the Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs 2, The Last Guardian. It’s been a great year in gaming, 2017 looks bright!

Oh, I totally forgot about Rise of the Tomb Raider- that’s one I should put on my list as well. Also The Walking Dead…I really need to get back into that game myself. I’ve only gotten through its first episode, so I have a lot of catching up to do. But, who knows when that’ll happen! You’re right that 2017 is shaping up to be a darn good year for games!

You should checkout the other TellTale games if you haven’t already. They are releasing a Guardians of the Galaxy game in 2017 too!

Ah, Uncharted 4, I recently beat that game, and it was pretty awesome. As for my backlog…I kind of ran out of games to play, so I’m just biding my time with Final Fantasy XII until some new games are released. The first two on my list…Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and Yooka-Laylee.

I’ve got my eye on Kingdom Hearts 2.8 as well, though as I’ve only played the first game, I’m thinking I should play through the other ReMixes first. Seems necessary in order to be ready for Kingdom Hearts III!

I swear that I’m going to get to Uncharted 4 someday. I really enjoyed the previous games in the series, but it’s all a matter of finding time the time to play now. But I’ll play it at some point.

I would say what remains of the Ace Attorney series for me. Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice. Those seem more manageable compared to the other games in my backlog, but we’ll see!

Good luck! I have in mind that I’d like to get into the Phoenix Wright series — they seem like especially good games to play when a break from big RPGs/adventure is needed. I’ve actually downloaded the first game onto my tablet, but now it’s a matter of finding time to play! Maybe after the holidays when things calm back down, haha. 🙂

Looks like a good list for the coming year! Thanks to great Christmas gifts and my ever-growing collection of RPGs, I have a big backlog for the next year. I still have to finish up Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Dragon Quest VII, and Bravely Second. And now I have FFXV, World of Final Fantasy, The Last Guardian, Paper Mario: Color Splash, and Dragon Quest Builders on the backlog. These are all good things of course, and I look forward to happy times in gaming as the new year approaches!

It sounds like you’ll be quite busy over the next 12 months! (FFXV alone could last me a whole year, no problem.) Good luck getting through what you can. With next year looking to be on the up and up for games, I think all our backlogs will grow considerably. 🙂

  6. Like you, The Last of Us is a big one that is ready and waiting to go… there are also a number of other AAA PS3 games I have on the shelf that I’d like to get to this year: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Uncharted 2, Tomb Raider, Bayonetta, Heavy Rain, Ni no Kuni and more.

I’ve also managed to secure the second half of Panzer Dragoon Saga so there’s that – I played the first half of the game back in 2015 but the latter two discs were scratched so I never got to finish it!

Ooo, now that’s a list of heavy hitters! (Reminds me, too, that I’d like to get to Heavy Rain someday myself.) Here’s wishing that 2017 bestows upon you plenty of free time to play.

Actually…can 2017 just bestow that upon ALL of us? Just, more free time generally. And maybe some free money too, haha.

Reblogged this on Recollections of Play and commented:

As the revisiting of Listmas posts on UWG continue, at the end of last year I was prompted to take a long, hard look at my backlog of games and compare it to games promised in 2017. And while this year is going to be a good one for gaming, I realized that I’ve got some pretty darn good gaming fare already at my disposal. Hence, for me, this year my gaming is going to be about clearing out some old titles to…well, make way for some new ones, surely.
