The Secret of the Cheese in Dragon Age: Inquisition – The Descent

Much like its predecessors, Dragon Age: Inquisition is steeped in lore, and there’s no shortage of odd and unusual leads to follow from its plethora of codex entries. Some lead to exemplary gear, others lead to exclusive story additions or dialogue between characters. But none lead to one of the game’s strangest and most humorous confrontations with a hidden figure in its DLC, The Descent. Setting off on this particular path is only accomplished through…

…cheese.

Wait, cheese?

Yes, cheese! This unmarked and once very sneaky but now well-documented secret encounter, one of the best in the game, involves the “almighty” Nug King, an audience with which can only be obtained with cheese. But not just any cheese that’s strewn about Thedas, oh no! There’s but one wheel of cheese in Thedas that will satisfy the Nug King, and it’s easy to miss.

Inquisition’s DLC, The Descent, takes the Inquisitor into the Darkspawn-ridden Deep Roads to battle these monstrosities and new adversaries while uncovering a mystery. Attempting to find the fabled Nug King is a delightful addition to what is otherwise a long jaunt through loads of underground caverns, and the journey starts with simply picking up a certain cheese wheel in one of Deep Roads’ thaigs (dwarven underground villages) – the Ruins of Haidrun. Should one go just the right way in the ruins, the Inquisitor will find a house with said wheel o’ cheese. Picking up the cheese will begin the quest the find the Nug King.

Upon following the “clues” bestowed to the Inquisitor, the quest ends in the Nug King’s “kingdom” in the Forgotten Caverns, where, upon offering up the fabled cheese wheel, the Inquisitor is allowed an audience with the king of all nugs. The meeting is silent but whimsical, as the Inquisitor is duly “judged” by the Nug King to be worthy of its company. Nothing comes of the meeting except for some comical respite, and a power point, should one need it.

The king will see you now.

It is worth noting that the Nug King wears the same crown as Dragon Age II’s viscount of Kirkwalk, who…um…loses his head (literally) at the hand of the Qunari. How it ended up with a band of nugs in the Deep Roads is another mystery, a secret yet to be revealed!

Totally! But it’s awesome the devs thought to include it, as it certainly made going into the Deep Roads worth it. 😀
