Nintendo Swings for the Fences

Well, what an interesting year, and then some, it’s shaping up to be in the world of gaming! After the Xbox Showcase at Game Fest, I didn’t think much else could come out on top. But, Nintendo then went and released a phenomenal Direct that proved they are still in it to win it. Though nothing was said about the Switch’s successor, the list of games available and announced was impressive. Like everyone else (or so it seems), I was most excited by The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, title following the recent Link’s Awakening remake that finally puts Zelda in the driver’s seat! It was also nice to see that Metroid Prime 4 is still a thing. It’s been, what, almost seven years since it was first announced? The new footage shown of the game was certainly swoon-worthy, and I’m sure it made lots of fans very, very happy. My own Switch wishlist, though, is and soon will be filled with a few other notable titles they showed, starting with…

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection

Video from YouTube user Capcom USA.

Back when I was headlong into the first three Ace Attorney games and pining for more adventures featuring pensive prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, I read about the Investigations games. Only available in Japan as two 3DS titles, the games sounded like good times away from the courtroom. As much fun as the series’ courtroom back-and-forth could be, Ace Attorney’s various investigations held all the intrigue. So, make a legal-ish game where the investigation is the gameplay, and stick a character like Edgeworth front and center, and I’m in!

Funko Fusion

Video from YouTube user Nintendo of America.

I don’t own any Funko figures or have any stake in the brand. So imagine my disbelief when I was taken in by a game featuring exactly that – characters that look like Funko Pops. Believe me, I was more surprised by anyone! The game just look charming and adorable, what with its various movie and pop culture references taking on the Funko look, the characters besides. Miitopia, at least, taught me to not judge a game on its silly looks alone. Funko Fusion rides high on silliness, but, as with Miitopia, it appears to have some solid gameplay underneath that goofy visage.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics

Video from YouTube user Marvel Entertainment.

Alas, this game is wreaking havoc across the Internet currently, what with its lack of presence on Xbox. I get it…and I’m not getting this particular compilation on the Switch. But, I was overjoyed to finally, finally, finally, see the old Marvel vs. Capcom games again (especially Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, an all-time favorite), and they look better than ever. The collection isn’t all fighting games, but it’s all great games, and I cannot wait!

(Now…if Capcom would only get on with re-releasing Capcom vs. SNK 1 & 2…pretty please?)

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD

Video from YouTube user Nintendo of America.

I missed the Wii’s Donkey Kong wave when Donkey Kong Country Returns was released for it; but now, I can have it on the Switch. And wow, does it ever look good! The game itself always looked like a fantastic time (Just see our own playthrough as proof!) There’s still a wait, as the game isn’t coming out until early next year, but I can totally see DK and the gang joining my Nintendo library once again. What a grand reunion it’ll be!

Mio: Memories in Orbit

Video from YouTube user Nintendo of America.

Much like with the first time I ever saw Ori and the Blind Forest, Mio: Memories in Orbit is a game too pretty to ignore.  Its platforming action looks genuine, too, but it’s hard to not drool over its gorgeous, hand-drawn graphics. Mio’s short reveal was high on looks and short on story, but this will be one title to watch.

I will confess that I wanted some news on the next console, but I can live with what we got. The new Zelda game is sort of intriguing.

Agreed that the lack of new console news was disappointing. Hopefully we’ll see something (real) of it sometime soon.

I’m glad you mentioned MIO, because I’d completely forgotten about it amidst all of the other announcements! I love the art style and the gameplay makes me think of a faster paced Hollow Knight! Since Silksong and Crownsworn are still both MIA, this’ll probably the next game I pin my hardcore platforming hopes on haha. 😀

It just looks amazing, doesn’t it? And it seems like it has some neat mechanics, aside from regular platforming. Compared to some of Nintendo’s other big announcements, MIO could easy fly under the radar, but it’s definitely one to keep an eye on!
