Spooktober Poll Results Are In!

Over the course of the last four weeks, our spooky discussions revolving around horror games and what about them terrifies us the most have been accompanied by equally spooky polls where you, our dear readers, could participate and let us know what you find the scariest in video games.  From the scariest horror subgenre to the creepiest environments, we gathered your answers, and it’s now time to reveal the results below.  A more in-depth evaluation will follow, but for now, enjoy some simple statistics before you leave for a night of Trick-or-Treating or start that scary movie.  And of course, thank you to all who participated!

Week 1: Scariest Horror Subgenre
Options: Survival, psychological, jumpscare, action, stealth, suspense, cosmic horror

Results (10 votes total):

1st place: Psychological (50%)
2nd place: Jumpscare (30%)
3rd place: tie – Action, Suspense (10%)

Week 2: Most Frightening Types of Scares
Options: Being chased/followed, jumpscares, when things move when you’re not looking, confined spaces, background whispers, large creatures, gore

Results (9 votes total):

1st place: Being chased/followed (33%)
2nd place: Things that move when you’re not looking (22%)
3rd place: 4-way tie: Jumpscares, Confined space, Background whispers, Gore (11%)

Week 3: Scariest Enemies
Options: Bugs, humanoid, large monsters, paranormal (ghosts), undead, eldritch monsters, unseen enemies

Results (9 votes total):

1st place: Unseen enemies (33%)
2nd place: Undead (22%)
3rd place: 4-way tie – Bugs, Humanoids, Large monsters, Paranormal (11%)

Week 4: Scariest Environments
Options: Abandoned buildings, forests/swamps, deep water, outer space, spaces that are too open, claustrophobic spaces, caves, cemeteries, liminal spaces

Results ( 11 votes total):

1st place: Claustrophobic spaces (45%)
2nd place: tie – Abandoned buildings, Deep water (27%)
