I know that I can’t say that Super Mario Galaxy is an objectively awesome game, but I really want to! I realize that it trades tight level design for worlds that are often a little too big, and getting Power Moons is altogether too easy. I can acknowledge that. It’s not a perfect game and is in fact deeply flawed in many ways. However, I still love it, and while I can’t say that the game is objectively awesome, I’m pretty sure I can get away with saying that its soundtrack is. It’s just so good!!
Now, not every track is out an out amazing, but most of them are. I remember multiple occasions where the music was fit the stage or action so well that I couldn’t help but stop and take it in. The first of these came the very first time I dropped into Fossil Falls, Super Mario Odyssey’s first real level. It all happens so fast. This theme starts up the instant Mario lands in this drop-dead gorgeous-looking level. Not gonna lie, I actually got a little choked up afterward.

Mario games have been all about taking their players on grand adventures through interesting worlds for a long time now. Even though each game goes about it differently, this quality is always there. Fossil Falls serves as an acknowledgement of this, and it’s theme almost seems to be welcoming the player home. “Yes, this is the same Mario experience you’ve come to know and love,” it says. “It’s just bigger and better than ever before.” Whether or not that proves true is up to individual players, but here in these opening moments I couldn’t help but feel like I was about to embark on the grandest Mario adventure ever, and I get the feeling that most gamers who picked this game up felt the exact same way.
It was almost more than I could take at the time, and it’s mostly thanks to this overwhelmingly jubilant level theme. Super Mario Odyssey’s composers really outdid themselves with this one. As much as I love the music from the classic Mario games, this soundtrack has got to be their best work yet! You can really tell they put everything they could into this! At least that’s what I think.
What do you think of the Fossil Falls theme? If you’ve player Super Mario Odyssey, what kind of impact did it have on you? What’s another song that had a similar effect?
