Unforgettable: The Lemon Rant from Portal 2

I don’t write posts for the Unforgettable series very often because it is rather important that whatever topic I choose be very special indeed.  It has to be more than just a cool boss fight or a humorous line of dialogue.  It has to be, well, as the title suggests, utterly unforgettable.  It has to be something that you continue to think about months and even years after you first played the game in which it took place.  The Portal series is an easy candidate for these kinds of posts because it is comprised of a very unique pair of games.  In fact, I have already covered them in the past when I wrote about Still Alive and Want You Gone.  Best ending credits ever.  In short, these games are pretty amazing and are home to some great humor, most of which comes from the antagonist, GLaDOS herself.  Surprisingly enough, however, the best dialogue in the series does not come from this murderous AI, but someone else entirely.

As awesome as GLaDOS is, by the second half of Portal 2, it was Cave Johnson who really stole the spotlight for me.  The CEO of Aperture is only seen in photographs and only heard in old recordings, but he is definitely not a guy you can easily forget.  To put it lightly, he has a very…strong personality.  And surely all fans of the series will remember one recording best of all, which many have simply dubbed “the lemon rant”.  When life gives you lemons, do you want to know what Mr. Johnson thinks you should do with them?  Listen and find out.

I don’t know how many times I’ve listened to that, but it never gets old.  Portal has so many great moments, from GLaDOS’s passive aggressive comments about your character’s weight and fashion sense, to the stupid but lovable Wheatley, to that wacky Space Core whose rant about space has become my favorite ringtone.  But Cave Johnson’s enraged “lemon rant” is just so…unforgettable.

Gotta love Cave Johnson! Despite all the questionable things you learn about him over the course of the game, you can’t help but feel bad for the guy after hearing this. He wanted to achieve so much more, but his own recklessness ensured that he wouldn’t. The utter frustration and anger in his voice is incredibly palpable.

He’s definitely an interesting, and memorable, character. It’s really a testament to Valve’s storytelling abilities that we are able to get to know, and feel for, a character whom we never actually meet and is long gone by the time the game takes place.

Yeah. Here’s hoping that we’ll see another proper Valve game released soon.
