Rumors have been swirling lately that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time might be seeing a remake as early as January next year. The thing is, Prince of Persia is, and has always been, a Ubisoft property. If it was the Ubisoft of the 2010s making this potential remake, I’d be excited. But this is modern Ubisoft we’re talking about.

It really only knows how to make one game, and has been consistently compromising the core of that game (open world sandbox RPG) for the sake of further monetization. As much as I’d like to see Prince of Persia return, I’m not sure I want to see it come from this modern Ubisoft. Anyway, this story was initially reported by Push Square, and it cites Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson as the source of this speculation and goes onto back it up further with info gleaned from recent Ubisoft financial reports.

A remake for Prince of Persia was officially announced back in 2020 and was originally going to have a January 2021 release date. The project then promptly disappeared into the ether with no official word being given on it since. This is more or less in line with Ubisoft’s habit of either forgetting about projects (often for years at a time) or just cancelling them outright if they’re not related to Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six: Siege.

I dunno if anyone recalls, but this is the same company that has started development, stopped it, restarted it and entirely forgotten Beyond Good and Evil 2 multiple times over the last fifteen years. And that was before they entered into the financial abyss they’re currently trying to pull themselves out of. So excuse me if I’m not entirely convinced that they’re planning on delivering anything outside their main series anytime soon, much less anything good.

Of course, I hope that the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake does make it out of development hell and is actually really good. Still, I really don’t think modern Ubisoft is up to such a task.
