Rusty Rabbit: Demo Review

Rusty Rabbit is a Metroidvania about a grumpy old rabbit named Stamp who explores the ruins of Smokestack Mountain in his mech suit, Junkster, in search of even more, well, junk.  The demo takes roughly 30-45 minutes to complete, and in that time, you explore two industrial looking areas and meet another group of rust diggers known as the BBs.

The tutorial level has us getting used to Junkster’s abilities, such as a drill, a grapple, and the ability to climb up walls.  Though it’s not long before you lose many of these abilities (in classic Metroid fashion), and I imagine you’ll regain these powers as the game progresses.  One interesting addition is some light RPG elements, where you can gain experience from destroying blocks and defeating enemies in order to earn skill points, which will allow you to gain new abilities.

Never did I think I’d see a rabbit in a mech suit

Before I played the demo, I came prepared with the knowledge that the game can be very dialogue-heavy, and certain characters take a long time to deliver their lines, with Stamp being the worst culprit.  After meeting the BBs, I couldn’t play for long before the game was inevitably interrupted once again by even more yakking.  Honestly, if the whole game is like this, I can see it getting old pretty fast, especially since, so far, I wasn’t particularly interested in the characters.

Don’t ask what BB stands for. They don’t know, either.

As a big Metroidvania fan, this game doesn’t look like my thing.  My favorite part of this particular genre is the exploration, and reviews say there isn’t really much of that to be had, with minimal room to wander off the beaten path.  Plus, as I mentioned earlier, the frequent interruptions to gameplay could be pretty aggravating.  But if you’d still like to give this game a try, Rusty Rabbit is available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5 for $19.99 and looks to last about 15-20 hours.
