If I hadn’t played Dredge a couple of years ago, fishing and horror wouldn’t exactly strike me as a natural combination, much less one the works. Even so, it worked fantastically in that game. Dredge was pretty simple gameplay-wise, yet it managed to create real feelings of fear and even panic whenever I found myself out on the water after dark. There hasn’t been anything like it since, but that might change soon now that Out Fishing has debuted on Steam.
According to the Steam Page, Out Fishing offers many of the things one would expect from your average fishing simulator. You can throw out your line, upgrade your fishing gear and even make money selling your daily catch. It’s also got relaxing background music, a weather system and even a day-night cycle to really draw players in and get them immersed in their task. Well, that is until that cycle turns those relaxing days into bone-chilling nights.
It just so happens that the player character in Out Fishing is getting their fish from a lake that’s infamous for disappearances, one which also happens to be located in the middle of what may or may not be a haunted forest. Dangerous things lurk in the pitch-darkness beyond the light of the player’s campfire, and they only get bolder with each passing night.
If they want to live and continue enjoying their favorite fishing spot, players will need to continually upgrade their camp and its defenses. Fail to catch enough fish or invest your income poorly, and you could very well become the subject of the next spooky disappearance tale the locals will whisper about. Manage to survive, though, and you might just be able to get to them bottom of what exactly is going on with this lake and the woods surrounding it.
Out Fishing isn’t one-to-one experience for Dredge, but that’s a good thing. It’s more fishing thrills in an entirely different context! It’s only available to wishlist on Steam at the moment, but hopefully it see a solid PC release followed eventually by console ports.
What do you make of this? How do you think it’ll compare to Dredge?
