As you may or may not already know, Square enix recently announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, which was going to be some sort of mobile game meant to bridge Kingdom Hearts 3 and the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 4. Square Enix’s stated reason for cancelling the game was its putting greater focus on the development of Kingdom Hearts 4, which you’d think fans would be in favor of.
Instead, reactions have been very negative, which is odd considering the almost complete lack of discussion or buzz prior to the cancellation. Now, there’s apparently a petition going around demanding that Square Enix release the unfinished title. Yup, another year, another fan petition.
As reported by Screenrant.com, the “instantly popular” petition has already gathered over 500 signatures in its first day, supposedly showing a lot of support for the ARG mobile game (think something similar to Pokemon Go). Their argument is that the game was already playable in some form back in 2023 (when Square Enix conducted a limited stress test), so the developer should be able to release it in some form, or at least put out the cutscenes on YouTube or something.
It’s true that Square Enix is throwing away several years of work by cancelling Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, but another reason it gave for the cancellation was that the com- pany wasn’t confident that it could deliver a “satisfactory long-term experience,” meaning that whatever they’ve made so far likely isn’t all that fun. It may also just not want to try chasing yet another worn-out trend after suffering several recent failures doing so. It’s likely not satisfied with the story either.
Now, putting aside the whole “instantly popular” petition thing (though I wouldn’t exactly call 500 signatures “popular” for something on the internet) aside, why are fans suddenly so interested in this? I mean, gameplay for these sorts of things isn’t exactly thrilling for one, and for another, does the Kingdom Hearts series really need yet another meandering side-story that winds up going absolutely nowhere?
I mean, the story (whatever it even is anymore) already gat buried under minutia, series jargon and tangled plot threads over a decade ago, so it’s not like whatever this was was going to offer any meaningful reveals.
Well, it’s not like getting a plot summary or something would hurt anything at this point, so hopefully those who now have a burning desire to know what would have happened in the game will get their wish someday.
What do you think? Do you need to know what happened are you fine letting this story remain untold? How do you feel about Kingdom Hearts in general these days?
