Now that publishers and storefronts are being forced to admit that we’re not really buy- ing our games anymore, it seems that they’re becoming more willing to go even further into the world of subscriptions and streaming. Xbox has already been doing it for years, and now it seems SEGA wants to get in on the action too.
According to BBC, SEGA is looking at launching its own “Netflix-like subscription service for video games.” They then draw comparisons to Game Pass and PlayStation Plus for similar services already out in the wild. They also point out that the likes of EA and Ubisoft already have their own services in place too. The quote they give, from SEGA president Shuji Utsumi, has him saying that subscription products are “very interesting.”
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m already quite tired of subscription services and don’t want to add any more to the collection I’m forced to have for my games. While Game Pass and PS Plus are technically popular, they only are so because Sony and Microsoft tie online play to them, meaning you’ve no choice but to buy them in order to play online with your friends.
Further, I don’t (and I doubt others do) play, or even want to play, enough SEGA games to want to subscribe to them. Also, being forced to stream tem online would be a deal- breaker. I want to run my stuff locally, not rent a runtime on some server somewhere.
What do you think of this development? Are you interested in more gaming subscription services?
