The Gravity Trickster: Demo Review

The Gravity Trickster is a puzzle-platformer where you play as a robot and navigate floating stages to collect keys and reach the exit.  The full game is 150 levels, while the demo spans 10 of those.  Various hazards include slippery ice, dark levels with low visibility, and electrical panels that appear when you approach.  You can even go up walls and upside down in certain levels.

This electric “maze” of sorts was kinda fun…

I wasn’t a very big fan of this particular demo, for a variety of reasons.  For one thing, the robot is clunky to control, with an awkward manner of turning 90 degrees at a time, making it difficult to turn quickly and avoid certain obstacles.  The game also only saves once every 5 levels, so if you get a game over at, let’s just say level 5, you have to redo levels 1-4 just to reach it again.  The levels are all pretty short, but this still feels like a rather annoying and outdated way to design a game.  It was also not terribly clear at first when you’re allowed to go up walls and such.  Apparently, you can only navigate onto the side and bottom of platforms at dead ends, but the game didn’t tell me that.  Graphically, it’s also not very impressive, with blocky stages just floating in barren landscapes.

Again, there was a bit of a variety in levels, as mentioned earlier, but it wasn’t enough to really make the game that much fun.  You can also unlock bonus levels by collecting the BONUS letters in a set of five stages.  I got one of these where I had to cross over the blocks to make all of them green, but after failing once, they kicked me out to try the next main stage, so I don’t know what happens if you complete it.

The game is available on PS4 and PS5 (and PC later this year) for $13.99, which seems a bit steep for a game that could technically be completed in a few hours and which artificially pads its length by saving every 5 levels.
