Late on Sunday, Helldivers 2 players got a big surprise with the sudden addition of mechs into the game. Now mechs were apparently announced a long time ago, so their existence isn’t the surprise. Rather it’s theirs and other vehicle’s sudden surfacing that is. How it’s come about is not yet clear at the time of this writing, but it’s definitely an interesting development no matter the circumstances.
As reported by TheLoadout.com, reports and video footage of mechs and other vehicles in Helldivers 2 started surfacing a da or so ago. At first, many assumed that cheaters had managed to break into the game and get the vehicles to spawn. However, the reports have become more and more widespread, with many players reporting that these new Stratagems suddenly became available to them for no apparent reason. With no official confirmation from Arrowhead and players apparently gaining access at random, the current working theory is that the Helldivers 2 game master (AI system) is behind it.
The system is meant to to control the flow of the greater war and missions, so it wouldn’t be too unusual for it to be able to introduce new developments after a certain amount of time. If this is the case, then an official announcement likely isn’t too far away.
As someone who only just started playing Helldivers 2, this is extremely exciting. There hae been many times already where I found myself wondering why there are (were) no vehicles. The distances you have to conver can be quite great at times, so their absence was sorely felt. Heavy weapons platforms like mechs are also exciting becuase you quite often find yourself surrounded by tank-like foes that you have no real good means of combating.
With these gaps filled, I don’t think I’d have any more real complaints about the game. It’s an absolute blast to play with friends and its Starship Troopers-style parody humor is right on point! If you’re at all interested, it’s worth a try!
