In case there was any doubt, Square Enix has more or less confirmed now that the next chapter in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series will have absolutely massive map for players to explore. Indeed, it looks like the whole planet from the original game has been included here, but at a much greater scale. Fortunately for fans though, they won’t have to always manually traverse it like they did on the PS1.
Square Enix posted a short video to Twitter early this week showing Cloud and co. warping between points of interest on what looks like an absolutely massive map. It’s kind of significant since the original Final Fantasy VII didn’t have a fast-travel function, instead requiring players to make their way to each location manually. This was fine at the time, but I’m glad the requirement hasn’t been maintained here.
It feels like the scale of just about everything has been dialed way up in this portion of the remake, and I think I’d get very bored of running back and forth very quickly. I mean, we already got a taste of that in Final Fantasy XV, and I don’t think we need any more of it. I got a chance to try Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth a while back at TGS 2023, and it was already lookng and playing pretty well at the time. With this and other recent anouncements, I see no reason why it couldn’t be one of the best releases of 2024. Well, here’s hoping anyway.
How do you feel about the addition of fast travel? Is it something of a relief or would you have preferred something different? What do think of the FF7 remake games so far?
