Lunistice: Demo Review

Lunistice is yet another one of those countless modern platformers that were made with our nostalgia in mind.  But instead of mimicking the graphical style of old SNES titles, this game is inspired by the 32-bit graphics of PS1 and Sega Saturn.  Lunistice stars the adorable tanuki, Hana, who can run and double jump through four levels in this game’s demo.  These stages are somewhat corridor-like in a manner similar to Crash Bandicoot, except with plenty of branching paths as you collect paper cranes, HANA letters, and hidden keys leading to secret exits.

As mentioned before, the demo contains four stages, two levels themed around a Japanese garden, one ocean level, and one amusement park level.  Hana is fast and controls very well; they even have a button for slowing her down for more precise jumping, which is much appreciated.  I generally had a fun time with the game, as the gameplay is fast-paced, lives are unlimited, and there are plenty of checkpoints, meaning you won’t have to redo much when you make a mistake.  The only level that gave me any trouble was the theme park, which had floors that made you move faster and these grind rail-esque paths where I frequently misjudged when to jump.

There’s really not much else to say about this game.  Lunistice doesn’t really seem to do anything groundbreaking, but if you enjoy platformers from the PS1 era, then this seems like a pretty solid game, at least as far as I can tell from the demo.  And I’m rather curious where the story goes, as it appears you’re literally inside some sort of game world?  Lunistice is available on Nintendo Switch and PC, and while the game takes just a few hours to complete, it’s sold for a very fair price of just $4.99!
