The Lightbringer: Demo Review

During the roughly 20-30 minutes I spent playing the demo for The Lightbringer, I’m still not entirely sure what to say about it.  The game is pretty much your typical 3D platformer, where you can run around collecting things, double jump, and attack enemies with your boomerang.

The game has simple, but clean, graphics and is frequently interrupted by the protagonist’s rhyming sister, whose voice acting isn’t great and whose verses leave something to be desired.  (Apparently, collecting health pickups will “help you stand still”. Um, ‘kay…) I don’t mean to nitpick, but my entire experience with the game was just average.  Average platforming spent solving simple puzzles and struggling to hit enemies with my boomerang.  There is plenty of exploration, which is neat, but it’s hindered by a camera that can’t be adjusted vertically.  So you can’t look ahead to decide which path is best, leading to a lot of unnecessary backtracking.

Oh, and when I died to the golem boss, I accidentally chose Main Menu instead of Restart Level and learned the hard way that the game did NOT save my progress.

The Lightbringer wasn’t exactly a bad experience, even if the camera was a nuisance, but it was very forgettable, and I couldn’t really recommend it based on my time with the demo.  And other full reviews of the game seemed to agree.  But if you’re still curious (and because I always provide this info), the game is available on the Switch and PC for $14.99 and can take about 4 hours for the story and 10 hours for completion.
