Papetura: Demo Review

Papetura is a unique puzzle game that looks as if it’s made entirely of paper.  The demo opens to find the main character inside some sort of cocoon, where he proceeds to hide in fear when a shadowy figure appears at the entrance.  While this game, at first glance, is rather intriguing, the demo does a rather terrible job at conveying exactly what this game is all about because, well…it lasts for a couple minutes, making it one of the shortest, and certainly the least comprehensive, demos I’ve ever played.

You see, once the creepy newcomer leaves, you are granted this item that allows you to shoot little bugs that seem to promptly die after fulfilling their purpose.  Your goal is to activate all the lights in your cocoon, with the little bugs being used to turn on lights that you couldn’t otherwise reach.  Once all the lights are on, you can leave, and after launching one final bug in order to make a bridge, the demo ends, just like that.

With that said, I know no more about Papetura now than I did before I played the demo, which forced me to look online for more information.  One interesting thing I discovered was that much of the paper world was actually hand-crafted, photographed, and combined with computer graphics to make the world we see!  On the other hand, it also sounds like the physics-based puzzles aren’t always the best.  (If you want to see the review I watched, the link is below:)

In the end, I have mixed feelings about this game.  I think the paper artstyle looks very interesting, even more so now that I have a greater understanding of the work that went into it.  But I’ve also played plenty of games in the past that look appealing, but are lacking from a gameplay standpoint, and I often regret the purchase.  What is certainly undeniable is the fact that Papetura looks like a one-of-a-kind experience that you won’t get elsewhere.  And if that’s enough to entice you to buy it, dear reader, the game is available on all major consoles and PC and ranges in price from $9.99 to $11.99.  Though you might want to wait for a sale, considering the game is only 2 hours long.
