Ubisoft Gives Players Another Reason to Hate Its Online ‘Service’

Apparently, Ubisoft account owners have started getting ominous emails stating that they need to, in effect, sign in or else. When questioned about these messages, Ubisoft revealed the users who don’t sign in regularly can actually risk losing their Ubisoft account and all their games with it. Yikes.

As reported by GameRant, an anti-DRM Twitter account made the initial reveal on Twitter, which was shortly followed by a reply from the official Ubisoft Support account. The reply more or less confirmed that the system currently in place is set up to suspend and eventually permanently close inactive accounts, and thus cut-off access to any games associated with it. So yeah, it’s very much a “use it or else” kind of situation.

I don’t know about you all, but I rather dislike having to deal with unnecessary online accounts. It’s just an extra, annoying step that I’ll always choose to ignore if given the option. In the case of Ubisoft, I think I made an account like 10 or 12 years ago and never signed into it again. I’ll bet that if I’d bought any of their garbage digitally, it’d be long gone by now.

Fortunately for me, I stopped playing Ubisoft stuff after the Xbox 360 era, so I could still dig up my discs and play if I want. For those who did go ahead and decide to trust Ubisoft with digital purchases though, this must be a real kick in the teeth. I’d say it’s just one more reason not to buy from them anymore and not to trust any large company with your digital library. Keep your games local and physical media-based as much as possible.

What do you think about this though? Would this cause you to think twice about buying from Ubisoft in the future, or is it actually not that big of a deal?

I agree with you 100% that the additional online accounts are one of the most annoying things in modern gaming. Ubisoft has been on my bad side for a while and this just insures I have no interest in playing their new games.

I just don’t understand why any of it is necessary at all. Like, why do I have to be hooked into a system outside of say, PSN or Steam in order to play a game I purchased through there? What does it gain Ubisoft (and the others that engage in this stuff)? It certainly doesn’t do us gamers any good.
