Square-Enix Teases Story For Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth

One of the most anticipated RPGs of the foreseeable future has to be Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. It’s funny to think that it’s already been a couple of years since Final Fantasy VII Remake released, and yet we really have been waiting a long time to see where Square Enix takes the story next. We all thought that the remake was just going to follow the usual “same game, but with better graphics” pattern, but Square really surprised us when it came to the plot. So now, it really is up in the air as to whether or not things will play out the way we think they will.

As seen in the tweet above, Square Enix (sort of) answered one the fans’ most burning questions: what are some things to look forward to? As should probably have been expected, Square’s response was fairly cryptic, but there are some things to be gleaned from its statement. Some important phrases to note here are “narrative developments”, “the heart of the Final Fantasy VII’s story,” and “while discovering each character’s destiny.” These all more or less tell us the same thing, but let’s break it down a bit anyway.

First, “developments” implies that something new is happening; if it was following the original story, it wouldn’t be a “development.” Second, saying that it has to do with the “heart” of Final Fantasy VII’s story tells us that the changes will be major rather than minor. Finally, if the characters are all going to end up in the same places that they did in the original, then there wouldn’t be anything for fans to “discover” in regard to their ultimate fates.

This is all to say that the story from here on is most likely going to diverge wildly from the story we’re used to, meaning just about anything could happen. Maybe some favorites will live this time around, maybe some others will die and maybe other will even take on roles that would have been unthinkable previously.

I don’t know about you all, but I’m absolutely down to see where Square intends to take the gang this time around. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not we’ll all end up liking it, but then we don’t have to, do we? What’s great about this situation is that if we don’t like how things end up playing out this time, there’s enough separation between the new and old versions that we can just opt to stick with the original story. Should be fun regardless though, right?

What do you think about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth going in a different direction from the original game? Have you played the original? Would you actually lke to see changes, or do you prefer to keep things as is?
