It seems that us Nier: Automata fans might just be getting a follow-up to one of our favorite games. There’s nothing official of course, but even just the hint of a sequel would be notable, and seems we’ve finally gotten one. We mustn’t get our hopes up, of course, but even so this is rather exciting, yeah?
As reported by TwistedVoxel, Nier series creator/director Yoko Taro recently made a guest appearance at the Nier concert in London. It seems that as the event neared its conclusion, he came onstage in order to express his gratitude to the fans. While on the stage, he informed the crowd that Square Enix’s president was present and that they should applaud as loudly as possible to show him that they wanted a sequel.
As noted by both TwistedVoxel and its source, it’s unlcear whether this was anything serious or not. However, it’s also been reported that the word “repent” was shown repeatedly as part of some dialogue woven through the event, and that when the word appeared for the final time, it was spelled “rep3nt.” It could be nothing; it could be a hint at a sequel, but either way this is the first mention of the possibility, which is itself rather exciting don’t you think?
The Nier series has seen a surge in popularity ever since Nier: Automata pulled it into the greater gaming consciousness, and both the Nier remaster and its mobile companion game apparently did decently in terms of sales and reception. 2B, 9S, and A2 have all been making regular guest appearances in other games ever since too, so it’s probably safe to say that they’re still popular and capable of carrying another game to success. I suppose all this is to say that I really hope that this turns into a true sequel announcement someday. I loved how the game ended, but I’d also absolutely love another adventure with my favorite white-haired androids!
How about you? Did you enjoy Nier: Automata? Would you like to see a sequel? Do you think this event actually means anything?
