Sqaure Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XVI is indeed getting a day one update when it launches on 6/22. This likely isn’t going to come as a surprise to anyone considering that launch day updates have been standard practice practically since the launch of the PS4, yet there is something about this one that might be interesting to those considering picking up the game.
According to MP1st.com, the FFXVI team had previously promised fans that there wouldn’t be a day one update. The producer, Naoki Yoshida, issued an apology to fans and said that they shouldn’t have promised that. However, he also took care to stress that the update was a minor one and wouldn’t be required to play the game. He also noted that those buying the game digitally will get the update as part of the initial download/pre-download, while physical buyers won’t need to worry about having a stable internet connection to download it. The game will function just fine without the update.
Honestly, seeing something like this comes as a breath of fresh air to me. Too many developers these days rely on their launch day patch to ensure that their game is functional (and often not even managing that), so it’s really great to see the team behind a major, AAA release being so committed to launching their game in a state that doesn’t require a day one patch to work properly. After seeing so many games launched in absolutely garbage, broken states, I’m really hoping we see more of this.
How about you? Got a take on this or the broken release trend in AAA gaming?
