I’m honestly not sure how the overall soundtrack stacks up against the rest of the Fire Emblem series since I’ve only played two other games so far. Even so, I can at least say that this is personal favorite since so many of its songs are still bouncing around in my noggin. As I mentioned in my last Resonance post, there are a few songs from Fire Emblem: Three Houses I’ve been wanting to talk about for a while now. Of these, the one I’ve wanted to highlight most (after “God Shattering Star”) is theme of the girl on the throne herself: “The Spirit Dias.”
“The Spirit Dias” was the very first track to really capture my imagination while playing through Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It’s encountered very early in the game, before one has any idea whatsoever of what’s going on and who Byleth (the player character) actually is. All they (and the player) know upon meeting the mysterious girl on the throne is that she’s definitely much more than she appears to be. The situation is enough to infer this, but it’s the music that really drives the point home.
After learning more about the girl and Byleth themself, this song becomes all the more fitting for this enigmatic character. It’s mysterious, grand and otherworldly tones are all explained and take on an even greater significance. Until then though, I found it to be a powerful motivator to progress through the story and get to the bottom of what exactly is going on. I had to know why exactly this was the theme, filled with an unintelligible chant and an unmistakable air of grandeur, accompanied this character in all her cutscenes.
I won’t say any more for fear of spoiling something important, but suffice it to say that this is an excellent piece of music that makes the eventual story pay-off all the more worthwhile. Definitely give it a listen if you haven’t already and try to resist the urge to look up all the details behind it. It’s absolutely worth your while to play the game and discover it for yourself!
What do you think of this piece? Can you think of another one that had a similar effect on you?
