Listmas 2016: Holiday Events!

Merry Christmas everyone! This most wonderful day of the year is finally here, and with it this list of most enjoyable holiday events in gaming. Today’s a big day and, celebtating or not, I’m sure that you’ve got more than a few things you’d like to do with it. So with that in mind let’s just jump right on in!

How Marcus Saved Mercenary DayBorderlands 2

Okay so this first one is less of an event and more of an add-on, but you’re not likely to find anything quite this festive elsewhere in video gaming. This little side-story sends your vault hunter to the little village of “Gingerton” in search of a train filled to the brim with guns needed for the Mercenary Day celebration. Heavy ordnance aside, “Gingerton” provides a stunningly picturesque Christmas village to run around in, complete with killer elves and giant malevolent snowmen intent on burying you using one giant snowball. It’s an absurdly festive and fun time, and is perfect for anyone who either enjoyed plain ol’ vanilla Borderlands…or who are just plain sick of all those holiday ads and want a little payback via dispatching some evil snowmen.

The DawningDestiny

The Dawning is a new addition to Destiny this December, and so far I’ve been having a great deal of fun with it! This one’s more of a winter event than anything else, but it brings in-game presents and extra content, so no problem here. In the Destiny universe, the Dawning is a season meant to commemorate guardian fellowship and the dawning of a new year and is celebrated through the exchanging of gift and a heaping helping of friendly competition. It’s a pleasant sentiment that’s actually reinforced by what’s on offer during the event. On each day of the Dawning event, players can open several gift boxes containing various resources, work towards better rewards in the Dawning quest line, and take in the festive sights at the Tower social space.

The Dawning also brought about the return of Sparrow Racing League (a personal favorite), and marked the addition of two newly remixed strikes and the strike scoring mechanic. Finally, the RNG for drops has been made much more forgiving during this period especially in the SRL playlist. It’s a great time to be a guardian, and so I highly recommend it to any Destiny players who’ve been taking from the game.

Christmas Eve & DayAnimal Crossing

Yup, it’s an Animal Crossing Christmas again. I already talked about this one briefly in another list, but I just had to include it here too. It’s just too heart-warming of an event to leave out. From the enthusiastic celebrations of the villagers to the most festive music you’ll here in any video game, Christmas Eve in Animal Crossing is a holiday event worth going back to year after year…especially if you want to complete your collection of Jingle furniture!

What are your favorite video game holiday events? Got any event stories to share?

Once again, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us here at United We Game! We hope your day is wonderful, and the coming year will find you well!

  1. Nice list! I didn’t know about the Borderlands one! That sounds so fun. Glad to hear you’ve been enjoying The Dawning, I’ve only tried the sparrow racing so far, but I’ll play the strikes and check out their scoring this week. 🙂

I definitely like SRL more than the strike scoring, but that’s just me. Still, the strike scoring is actually pretty fun since it feels like all those cool little PvE moments are finally getting some recognition. The extra element of competition is pretty fun too!

Animal Crossing was always THE holiday game for me. It covered Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Easter. I even watched the New Year’s Countdown once. Any AC game that embraces real-world holidays is always a plus.

Here’s hoping they add another AC game for the Switch!
