Unforgettable: The Flying Shell of Rayman 2

I haven’t written a whole lot of posts for my Unforgettable series because something has to really stand out to me to make the list.  It has to be shocking, exciting, or just too awesome not to share with the world.  It is only fitting, then, that one of my favorite games of all time gets to star in one of these posts, Rayman 2.  To be honest, the entire Rayman series is filled with unique and unforgettable moments (for example, water skiing behind a snake), but there is one part of this game that has really stuck with me, and I find it unforgettable because it is just plain fun.

The final level of the game before the final boss, the Prison Ship, can be pretty frustrating.  The entire first half involves sliding across the deck of this exceedingly large pirate ship, while avoiding lava, bottomless pits, and spikes, which really have no right being, well, on a pirate ship of any size.  Once you finish that little segment of suffering (at least the music’s pretty cool), you move on to the second half of the stage, where you get to ride a flying shell!  (No, not like a turtle shell.  It’s more like a missile or something.)  Up to this point of the game, you only got to ride walking shells, so getting to ride one that actually flies around like a plane was a totally awesome experience.  Sure, it’s difficult, and yeah, it’s not good that the shell explodes on impact, but hey, it’s certainly an epic end to an epic game.  (And you can see it in the video below.  The exciting stuff starts a couple minutes in.)

Woah, that shell ride looked awesome! Kinda reminds me of that time Daxter had to ride a missile in JAK 3, only this looked less nerve-wracking.

I love riding the flying shell. It’s definitely one of the best parts of the game, and it is certainly less frightening than Daxter on that missile, even if crashing is just as fatal.
